Comments: I stumbled upon your site while doing research for my ethnic studies class and was besides myself when I saw many familiar names. My name Is Renee E. Waash, Daughter of Kokichi Henry Washington. My father was born and raised in chichi jima. My great great grandfather, Augustine Washington, was married to Esther Thurlow Savory, Nathaniel Savory's Daughter. My father shortened our last name when he married my mother Eloise Ward, and added an extra A. Is it possible that we are speaking of the same Savory's? Other names on my family tree are Webb, Gilley,Gonzales,Mazarro, and Robinson. I would be interested in finding out. Great site Thanks Renee Waash

Comments: John You have an intersting web page. It is mind boggling sometimes when you learn how other people live. I spent right much time on Saipan during the war, but never had an association with the natives. It was forbidden. I never was involved in the every day life of the native islanders and it is all new to me. It is interesting though. Thank you Walter Bell

Comments: My father (My Starin) flew P-51's on ground attack missions against ChiChi Jima amnd HaHa Jima (sp?) in 1945 from Iwo Jima. The purpose of the attacks was to ensure the radio station at ChiChi Jima did not radio information to Japan about US airstrikes against Japan. One incident I remember him describing was the time he inadvertantly toggled one of the 500 lb bombs into the ocean by accident. The P-51's made on-the-deck attacks against ChiChi Jima to avoid the Japanese AAA and during the run in to the target they frequently encountered turbulence. As a result, my father was having trouble holding on to the stick and he mistakenly hit the bomb release. The reason the P-51's came in on the deck was the same reason President Bush was shot down in his TBM - neither aircraft had dive brakes and a glide bombing-style attack usually ended in aircraft losses. My father has mentioned many times that he was obviously nervous about flying B-29 escort missions or taking on Japanese fighters but he really disliked ground attack missions on the Bonins and over Japan. Downed American pilots were not well received in either location. Mark

Comments: Just got around to viewing my guestbook. Thank You. After the Battle Of Iwo, and we did survive, I was transfered to LST 1047, to go to Okinawa, when the war was over, we took the first occupation forces into Sasebo, Japan, then on to the Phillipines, then finally HOME after 18 Months fighting the Japs and the Typhoons. Our LCT was assigned the task of dealing with the JAP prisoners on Chici. So you can get a lot of info from them. We met after 50 years and it was great, amazing we all survived, the 11 men and 2 Officers assigned to the LCT1269. There is now only 5 of us and the Skipper remaining, and we stay in contact. In fact our cook was from Pittsburgh, but is now living in Florida. I will have Bob Korcozki contact you by E-Mail, he is now living in Chicago and Branson. John L. Paul thepope@csrlink.net

Comments: I was stationed on Chichi Jima from August 1964 to January 1967. I was the senior Yeoman in the Administration building. Enjoyed the people there and the climate (except the typhoons). Boarded many a Maru prior to typhoons to get the registration to bill them for the entry fee. That was quite an experience.

Comments: Was stationed on Guam from 1955-1956 and 1963-1966, handled communications to and from Chichi Jima at NavCommSta Guam. Met native teens attending school on Guam, one I particularly remember, lived with a USN CWO and his family, Irene Savory. Where can I get information on the atrocities committed by the Japanese military during their occupation of the Bonin Islands?

Comments: I came across your site while searching for anything about Nathaniel Savory. I have visited Chichi only once in 1996, but it's such a great place and I love there. The guest book is also very interestng to read and I'm a little bit surprised but glad to know that they are holding a reunion every year until this day. It's wonderful, and really something that the island and its people influenced us, isn't it? Hoping to go there again sometime when I go back to Japan. Thank you very much for the great information. kazoo
